Description

Francesco Tedeschini was born on 9th May 1439 in this house. He was pope from 22nd September to 18th October 1503. He was the son of Nanni di Piero, who in 1435 had married Laudomia, sister of Enea Silvio Piccolomini, that is Pope Pius II. The pope-uncle allowed his nephew to use his surname, and accompanied him in his the ecclesiastical career. Francesco's brief pontificate, supported by Cardinal della Rovere, who would become his successor under the name of Julius II, was cut short by an ulcer in his leg or, as some claim, by poisoning. The dwelling appears modest, but the Tedeschini family was wealthy and flourishing in Sarteano, at least from the second half of 1300s. However, the entrance is significant, carved after the Tedeschini family was incorporated into the more important Piccolomini family in 1459. Of the three coats of arms, the central one bears the Piccolomini arms, surmounted by the bishop's hat; the one on the left is divided into four equal sections by two crossed lines (quartered), and bears the arms of the Piccolomini and those of France, Aragon and Jerusalem; finally, that on the right is quartered, with the coats of arms of the Piccolomini, Aragon and Castile. The portal was carved following the death of Nanni in 1474.
